Basic life support & AED use
The basic life support & AED use programme (BLS & AED) is a short programme of learning designed to teach life saving skills.
The course content focuses on emergency care and includes CPR and other first aid skills that will provide a person `first on the scene` with basic knowledge to provide life saving actions. Trainees will learn skills in the sequence they will be used in a life threatening emergency and also follow the same priorities of care as all professional emergency responders. This results in sequenced learning that aids future skill retention.
Basic life support is not designed to provide skills to personal who will be responsible for managing an emergency situation for extended periods of time or when the complexity of injuries is likely to be great. It is therefore recommended a number of personal are trained to a higher level within any organisation. Full advice can be obtained from HSE guidance and the approved code of practice L74 (as amended) where a risk based approach should be adopted.
The basic life support & AED use programme may meet with an organisations internal risk assessment and meets with the recommendations of the HSE for `Appointed persons in the work place`. Appointed persons are simply members of a company or organisation who are nominated by the employer to be responsible for first aid in the absence of appropriately qualified first aiders
The basic life support & AED use programme is also suitable as an annual refresher session within a workplace when first aider's are trained to a higher level such as Emergency first aid at work (EFAW) or First aid at work (FAW).
The syllabus is as follows for BLS & AED use:
What to do in an emergency
First aid for the unconscious casualty
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
Automatic External Defibrillation (including AED use)
First aid for someone who is choking
First aid for the wounded or bleeding
Pediatric awareness skills for CPR/choking are covered as standard as part of the BLS & AED use programme.
Additional subjects may also be added at the clients request e.g Anaphylaxis and auto injector training. These additional subjects will incur an additional charge and lengthening of the course.
Timings
Training will take 4-5 hours.
Assessment
The basic life support course uses the following assessment methods:
Direct observation during practical skills sessions
Written self assessment questions
To pass the course trainees must demonstrate the practical skills required in the syllabus. We are dedicated to offering a fair and equal assessment process for all learners.
Each trainee will be required to be physically able to get to floor to perform CPR and also to put someone in the recovery position.
Qualification
Following completion of the training trainees will receive a certificate in basic life support & AED use. The qualification is valid for 3 years.
Requirements at the venue
Space will be required to conduct the training, to allow for practical activities. Allow for the footprint of a double bed in floor space per group of 3 to 4 trainees. Tables are not necessarily required for the trainees a minimum of a chair for each person. The trainer will bring along all training equipment and consumables as well as a projector for use on a blank wall, a large TV would also be suitable for the power point presentation (group size dependent).
Paediatric and Early years first aid (PFA)
The syllabus is designed to meet the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage issued by the department of education. (OFSTED recommended syllabus)
At the end of the course successful candidates will be able to:
Assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take.
Understand the roles and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider including contents of the first aid kit and the need for recording incidents.
Help a baby or child who is/had:
unresponsive and not breathing normally
unresponsive and breathing normally
having a seizure
choking
bleeding
suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss
suffering from anaphylactic shock
an electric shock
burns or scalds
suspected fracture
head, neck or spinal injuries
suspected of being poisoned
foreign body in the eyes, ears or nose
eye injury
bite or sting
suffering from extreme heat or cold
diabetic emergency, asthma attack, allergic reaction, meningitis and or febrile convulsions
Course is available as a 2 day (12 hour course) or a blended course 6 hours e learning and 6 hours classroom.
If choosing the blended option please ensure that e learning is suitable: The individual knows how to use the technology that delivers the e learning and has the means of supporting the learner during their training and a robust system to prevent identity fraud.
To set up online training for each learner, First4Aid Training will require the name of each learner and a unique email address for which log in details will be sent for each user.
Timings
6 hours is allocated to the e learning (Blended option)
For the classroom elements allow 7 hours to incorporate breaks.
